Reading to our son and using labelled praise to encourage his interest in books from the day he was born has meant that as a toddler he loves books. One of his favourite activities is going to the library and picking out books he wants to borrow. Reading during the toddler years has many benefits:
- Improving language and communication skills
- Increasing an understanding of the world
- Increasing emotional intelligence and empathy
- Improving the parent-child attachment relationship
- Fostering a love of books
- Learning to read from left to right (or right to left depending on what language you speak)

Toddlers can concentrate for longer than babies and have a greater understanding of concepts so you can pick books that have longer sentences. Toddlers love books that have a simple story and are interactive. So, although choosing a book with longer sentences is recommended, do not go overboard, and choose books for middle school kids (I have a whole collection of Dr. Seuss books that my child does not find interesting at all … I am waiting for the day he will find them interesting though!).

Note: Baby/Toddler books are quick and easy to read and you can often get through several books quickly. Some people may find reading the same books over and over again boring (I sure did). However, books can also be expensive to buy and take up a lot of space. I would recommend borrowing books from your local library. Most libraries have a baby/toddler book section. Our library lets us borrow up to 50 books at a time and keep them for three weeks (it is also easy to renew them online if I find I can’t get to the library to return them). Another option may be to swap books with family members and friends who have children of a similar age. Swapping/borrowing books will help keep you and your baby interested in reading without costing you anything. This also lets you test out which books your child will like. I’ve borrowed books before thinking my child would love them, but he did not give them a second thought. I’ve also borrowed books thinking he would probably not enjoy them, but he loved them. An example of a book that my son loved was a book about wombats. There was a page in the book that had a picture of a baby wombat being born and my son loved that page. I hate the sight of blood so needless to say looking at that picture gave my goose bumps. My husband found it hilarious because he knew I wouldn’t/didn’t like it. Anyway, I digress, my point is that borrowing/swapping books is a great way to test out what books your child likes and lets you read to your child without costing much.

Los niños pequeños pueden concentrarse durante más tiempo que los bebés y comprenden mejor los conceptos, por lo que puedes elegir libros que tengan oraciones más largas. A los niños pequeños les encantan los libros con historias sencillas e interactivos. Aunque se recomienda elegir un libro con oraciones más largas, no te excedas eligiendo libros para niños de secundaria (tengo una colección completa de libros del Dr. Seuss que a mi hijo no le parecen interesantes en absoluto … ¡aunque esperamos que algún día los encontrará interesantes!).

Nota: Los libros para bebés y niños pequeños son rápidos y fáciles de leer y, a menudo, puedes leer varios libros rápidamente. Algunas personas pueden aburrirse leyendo los mismos libros una y otra vez (yo, por ejemplo). Sin embargo, los libros también pueden ser costosos de comprar y ocupan mucho espacio. Un ejemplo de un libro que le encanto a mi hijo fue un libro sobre wombats. Había una página en el libro que tenía una imagen de un bebé wombat naciendo y a mi hijo le encantaba esa página. Yo odio ver sangre, así que no hace falta decir que mirar esa imagen me puso la piel de gallina. A mi esposo le pareció gracioso porque sabía que no me gustaría. De todos modos, estoy divagando, mi punto es que pedir prestados / intercambiar libros es una excelente manera de probar qué libros le gustan a tu hijo y te permite leerle sin que te cueste mucho.
