Praising while engaging in art and craft activities || Elogiar mientras participan en actividades artísticas y manualidades.

Engaging in art and craft activities with young children is great fun but, for some, it can also be stressful. Especially when adults have an idea of how they want the children to engage in the activity and the children don’t want to comply. When ever I find myself frustrated with an activity that my son (or a child I’m working with) might be engaging in, I try to look for ways to praise them for what they’re doing. This helps me focus on the positives rather then the negatives of some behaviours that I might not like. For example, mixing Play-Doh colours together can be frustrating for parents who like to keep the colours in their separate containers, however, kids love to mix colours. So instead, of focusing on how difficult in will be to try and organise the colours later I try to focus on how creative my son’s being with the Play-Doh. Below is a list of praises I like to use during art and craft activities. It is by no means an extensive list but will give you an idea of how to start praising these activities. In addition to helping calm my anxieties about mixing Play-Doh colours, praising also reinforces behaviours that I would like to see my son engage in more (I do not want him to be afraid of mixing Play-Doh colours just because his parents don’t like the way it looks. I would rather him be creative and experiment with Play-Doh, painting, drawing, etc).

Painting:

Great work holding the paintbrush correctly
Nice job painting on the paper
That’s a nice painting of a ____ (animal/vehicle/shape)
I like the colours you’re using
Wow you painted a great picture of grandma

Drawing/colouring

Nice work holding the pencil correctly
You did a great job sharpening the pencils

Playdoh:

Wow you rolled the playdoh into a snake
I like the ____ (animal/vehicle/shape) you created
Amazing job using the shape cutters/ roller/ scissors/ plastic knife/ rolling cutter/ embossing tool
Great job chopping the snake into bits

Craft

You’re doing a really great job cutting
Nice work gluing all the pieces together

Participar en actividades artísticas y manualidades con niños pequeños es muy divertido, pero para algunos, también puede ser estresante. Especialmente cuando los adultos tienen una idea de cómo quieren que los niños participen en la actividad y los niños no quieren seguir ese patrón. Cada vez que me encuentro frustrada con una actividad en la que mi hijo (o un niño o niña con el que estoy trabajando) está participando, trato de buscar formas de elogiarlo por lo que está haciendo. Esto me ayuda a concentrarme en los aspectos positivos y no en los negativos de algunos comportamientos que quizás no me gusten. Por ejemplo, mezclar los colores de plastilina puede ser frustrante para los padres a quienes les gusta mantener los colores en recipientes separados; sin embargo, a los niños les encanta mezclar colores. Entonces, en lugar de fijarme en lo difícil que será tratar de organizar los colores más tarde, trato de concentrarme en lo creativo que es mi hijo con plastilina. A continuación, hay una lista de elogios que me gusta usar durante las actividades de arte y manualidades. De ninguna manera es una lista extensa, pero le dará una idea de cómo comenzar a elogiar estas actividades.
